Sharing the planet...

We have just begun our final unit of inquiry of third grade and are exploring the world of plants. We headed up to the "hill", magnifying glasses in hand, and formulated the following questions:

We have all brought in a plant to take care of for the final 6 weeks of school.  We are responsible for researching the sun and water requirements for our plant.

Here is our growing plant nursery:

We've also planted pea seeds and are excited to see what happens!

Using iPads to Create Bar Graphs

During our data analysis math unit, students created bar graphs that analysed data related to the planets of our solar system. We used the "Numbers" app.  Here are a few examples:

3U Meets Science Fiction... Exoplanets!

3U is learning how to expand their imaginations by writing poetry about invented exo-planets.  It proved to be a great way to review adjectives and adverbs! This activity led us into full blown science fiction story writing...

Papier-mâché Planets!

This week has been all about exploring our solar system. We decided to get our hands dirty as we studied the planets. We used our iPads to read about and closely observe photographs of the planets. We used the Internet and space related apps and were blown away by the imagery we found.

Addition and Subtraction Problem Solving

Write a subtraction or addition word problem using three-digit numbers. Your homework is to answer a classmate's problem.

Steps

1.  Go to comments.

2.  In the comment bubble, type your name and then your problem.

Example:

Shelly's word problem:

My brother Scott has 854 hockey cards. My brother Michael has 423 hockey cards.  How many more hockey cards does Scott have than Michael?

3.  For homework, choose a problem that has not been solved yet.

4.  Go to comments.

5.  Type in:  I am solving (Shelly's) problem.  The answer is:  Scott has 431 more hockey cards than Michael.

Canadian Brochures

Brochures
Last week, we explored how brochures can be a great way to share information about the provinces and territories of Canada. We learned how to:

  • Distinguish between important and less important information
  • Summarise non-fiction text
  • Write persuasively
  • Capitalise the names of provinces, territories, cities, and other proper names of locations
  • Colourful drawings!

The brochures were hung up in the classroom for everyone to enjoy. You were graded in the following areas:

  1. Information
  2. Drawings
  3. Conventions
  4. Persuasive Writing Style

I love how creative some of you were with your catchy titles like:  Magnificent Manitoba, Notable Nova Scotia, Superb Saskatchewan, Natural Nunavut, and Outstanding Ontario!

Here are some examples of excellent work:

Lots of great information included in Emily's brochure about Nova Scotia:

Kevin drew some eye-catching drawings of the Yukon Territory:

No problems with capitalisation, periods, or spelling in Melissa's Albertan brochure!

Chloe persuaded me to check out New Brunswick! How about you?

After reading about all the great places to visit in our country I'm excited to plan my next trip!

3U + Snow = FUN

We attempted to go snowshoeing at Cypress today but turned back early due to poor road conditions. We stopped for about 30 minutes to enjoy the HUGE snowfall before heading back to school.

A true Canadian adventure!

Mother nature was not on our side again so rather than going to Cypress for our snowshoe adventure, we hit the field! I love how adaptable you all have become - a sign of your growing maturity.

3U ~ The VSO Version

3U ~ The Map Version

Tuning in to "who we are"

We have been sharing everyone's family histories this week and put pictures on a world map of the different regions we come from. We sure have a lot of the map covered!

Mulgrave Ski Club

Snow flakes.
by Emily Dickinson
I counted till they danced so
Their slippers leaped the town,
And then I took a pencil
To note the rebels down.
And then they grew so jolly
I did resign the prig,
And ten of my once stately toes
Are marshalled for a jig!
We may not have had much snow in town this year but the flakes were dancing up on Cypress Mountain! Well done to all the Mulgrave participants of this year's ski and snowboard club. Here are a few of our 3U'ers all geared up!
